DIY Hair extensions are basically products that can be attached to your natural hair using clips and then blended to look like your own hair. This sounds simple but it is not - let me give you a window into how this work is done.

This hair is donated by women, out of their own will to temples. We source these in exchange for charitable contributions that go for the welfare of underprivileged children.
Once we have the hair it goes through the process of hackling, it is cleaned and separated - all pre-dyed and grey hair is eliminated, so it hair that has damage or split ends. Ultimately what we have is bunches of the healthiest hair from each donor.
We only use one donor's hair when we create a set for you. This makes the hair look even more natural although it means extra care and extra man-power to maintain this standard.
Before the hair is delivered to you it is shampooed and conditioned again, straightened and then packed for you.

Synthetic hair extensions: Synthetic hair extensions are basically plastic in hair form, it creates pollution and non biodegradable waste that you as a consumer are accountable for if you purchase and encourage such products. On the other hand, these extensions will not blend well with your hair because, hello, they are not real!

Mixed Real and Synthetic Extensions: A lot of players on the market are providing mixed extensions in the name of real human hair extensions. The problem here is, first of all, you are trying to fool the customer which unfair and even legally wrong. Secondly, these products do not blend well with your hair, they go weird after a couple of washes because they are made of two different materials. Ultimately, they are non-biodegradable. Life is already tough, I don't think any of us can deal with bad karma at this point.
The bottom line is that you need to make well-informed decisions as a consumer when you are purchasing products no matter whom you purchase it from. Your choices will determine the future of the human race, Rome was not built in one day.
